[DJ Tayo]

As one of the instigators of the breakbeat sound, 2001 looks set to shape up to be a grand one for Tayo.

After handling the promotions for most of the breaks labels in the early days, writing about the scene’s players, promoting the premier breakbeat night Friction, as well as playing the records all over the country, Tayo has proved himself as an important part of the music’s development.

A chance meeting with Rennie Pilgrem in the Soul Jazz record shop, where he used to work, turned him onto Rennie’s TCR label and a style of music similar to the hardcore, drum and bass, techno and hip hop records he was into. Another chance meeting with Adam Freeland and the three set about Friction, a focal point for the UK Breakbeat sound.

His skills behind the decks have led to profiles in many of the taste maker publications, and led Jockey Slut to describe him (along with Rennie and Adam) as “becoming as influential to the next generation as Fabio and Grooverider were to aspiring junglists”. DJ have also tipped him as one for the future calling him, ‘a cheeky chappy with bags of media savvy – should do well.’

Tayo currently holds residencies at Home, Bugged Out, the Big Beat Boutique, is a monthly regular at Fabric, and also finds time to hook up with mates, Basement Jaxx for the monthly ‘Rooty’ parties in Brixton. Over the past twelve months Tayo has made his debut at Space, Ibiza, alongside the Jaxx, (under his house alter ego) and is currently enjoying the sunshine at Australia’s Vibes On A Summer’s Day festival after a successful debut there last year.

Tayo’s media savvy has seen him create the Mob label, which is making all the right noises and has offered some of the coolest young artists a home, think Stanton Warriors, Beber and Dynamic Shadows.

Recently Tayo has followed the logical route into the studio. He formed World Of Crime with friend Brixton, and has so far released tracks for Carl Cox’s Ultimatum Breaks label as well as Rennie Pilgrem’s TCR label. His next single ‘Fire Good’ alongside Precision Cuts will be released on Mob and features on his ‘Y4K’ mix album for Distinctive Breaks.
