His name carries a lot
weight in dance music. One that also sells to the crowd. As far as
casual goes, it could not have been as casual as his arrival to Zouk.
Having made the short walk from Grand Copthorne next door, he passed the
waiting crowd outside unannounced and drawing little to his presence.
Admittedly, most didn’t seem to recognise him while he was on his
handphone. Much
like his mix compilations, his set could be described as two halves that
make a whole. Getting deep and moody with basslines that chugged along.
A build-up exemplified by Medway’s ‘Release’. One breakdown after
another, they were lapped up with fervour. Characterised by clapping and
cheering from the crowd. A blend of progressive house and trance with a
tint of atmospheric vibes in Head Honcho’s ‘Waters Of Jericho’. It
was only during the second half of his set that he raised the tempo,
playing out more trance tunes. Breakdowns remained a key feature of his
set. To add to its uplifting nature, on two occasions when the basslines
kicked in, a rush of air was pumped into the room creating a veil of
‘smoke’. His more energetic programming prompted hands-in-the-air
action. As his set was brought to a close, he obliged with one last song. “It Began in Afrika...”. From beginning to end, there was no argument as to how packed the dancefloor was. Expectations were high simpy because he was John Digweed. So while some went away disappointed, others were no doubt delighted. |
