JOHN DIGWEED @ ZOUK
15.06.01

Coming on at about 12 midnight, German technomeister Thomas Schumacher played his first selection and held the floor for a 3 hour set. His set was tight if not a bit tame compared to his mix compilations. It was a funkier mix for Singapore. Peppering the mix were throwbacks to the eighties in tracks and/or vocal samplings. No one who have imagined hearing 2 Live Crew’s ‘The F@#k Shop’ in the midst of a techno set. That curiosity was answered as it was played out twice with its dialogue in full on the second run. Not sick of retro yet? Donna Summer’s seminal ‘I Feel Love’, Madonna’s ‘Papa Don't Preach’ and Michael Jackson’s ‘Billie Jean’. You had to be there to appreciate it.

Despite Thomas Schumacher headlineing the night at Zouk, Lee Rous (of Plump DJs) was back at Phuture for a second set in as many days. There he was holding his on, with a tight set made of choice selection of breaks. He featured Plump DJs’ very own mix of ‘Nine Ways’ by JDS which pulled the crowd in with its classic build-up. Plump DJs is known for its house inspired breakbeat and this has lead to a harder more progressive style of breakbeat as compared to that of hip hop. I am sure this is what everyone was here for. Like the more vocal Zouk crowd, you could tell by observation that everyone was having a good time.
