DANNY HOWELLS @ ZOUK 20.04.01 

Whistling. Claps. Tribal yells. Screams. No, these were not efxs Danny Howells used during his set. Adulation - that is what he got from the crowd.  

Judging by the build up to his 2^nd visit to Singapore, most of the local clubbers felt he would not be up to par as many were not impressed during his previous visit (at Shooters last year). As most found out, those sentiments were unfounded. The crowd lapped up the breakdowns as much as they indulged in the build-ups. 

Following a rousing warm-up set by Zouk’s resident DJ (screams could be heard accompanying Fatboy Slim’s ‘Star 69’), Danny wasted no time and got straight into his set. Progressive and groovy at times. With a packed dance floor (I’m sure those at the bar area were dancing too), everyone was enjoying themselves, including Danny himself. With a smile on his face, he offered a handshake or two, and joined the crowd - clapping to the beats.  

Maniam made a brief appearance, dishing out his percussive tabla beats, adding a tribal flavour to the night. Steadily, the tempo was raised with surety of a peak. Screams were no doubt audible throughout Zouk the whole night. Danny’s mixing was simply for lack of a better word – tight. And as the night wore on, the music got harder, never letting up. A little past 3am, the platter wound down before the crowd prompted for an encore. Danny obliged with one last song. 

(Yes, he played a couple progressive tunes that have made their way on various compilations. I was enjoying myself too much to identify most of them.)
